Swindon Borough Council
Swindon, England
Swindon Borough Council are on an exciting journey to transform service delivery. We want our town to be the best it can be. Our ambitious vision in the new Swindon Plan is supported by realistic transformation programmes, with the people of Swindon at their heart. Because that’s who we’re doing it for – the communities and businesses that make our town great. As part of the Council, you’ll support a friendly local authority making decisions with real impact. It’s all for better public services. Better processes. And a better quality of life, for everyone. Join us, and Swindon will be better with you.

Swindon Libraries are looking for staff to join our current team of Casual Library and Information Assistants (Casual LIAs) to work “as and when required” basis.

Casual LIAs cover annual leave and sickness for library staff. This work may be at any of the SBC run libraries in Swindon. There will be some single staffing required and locking and unlocking of buildings.

We are looking for people that can be flexible and work between the hours of:

  • 8:45am and 6:00pm weekdays
  • 9:45am and 4.15pm Saturdays
  • 10:45am and 3.15pm Sundays

Shifts can be between 3-7 hours long. Most shifts are agreed 1 month in advance but shifts may be requested at short notice to cover sickness.

Your next role

The Library and Information Assistants (LIA) role is challenging and varied. LIAs are responsible for providing frontline services to customers, local residents and visitors at libraries across Swindon. LIAs help customers and residents to access physical and online information. LIAs support customers and residents in their use of IT and encourage reading and lifelong learning.

LIAs deliver children’s activities e.g. story times and class visits as well as supporting other library promotional events. They also support volunteers and volunteer activities.

LIAs may be asked to work at any branch across the Swindon Library network.

Successful candidates will need excellent communication and IT skills as well as good levels of literacy and numeracy. An awareness of the services the library provides and an interest in books and lifelong learning is desirable.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).

Your next package

Please see our Rewards and Benefits offer for more details.

As an employee, you will receive a diverse and exciting environment in which to work, encouraging creativity and innovation whilst recognising the need to support ongoing personal development and a flexible work life balance.

For Swindon to thrive in the future, we need to lay the foundations now. It’s why our regeneration and transformation programmes are already underway. So, you’ll be joining us at an exciting time on our journey. We’ll look to you to share your knowledge, influence decisions and drive real, positive change. With your contributions, we’ll achieve our vision of a prosperous, re-vitalised Swindon together. And you’ll be proud to say it was made better with you.
