About us

SELCS-CMII is a world-leading centre for teaching, research and public engagement, focussing on the literature, linguistic traditions, history, sociology, philosophy, art, film and other aspects of the cultures associated with the languages we teach (Danish, Dutch, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Old Norse, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish).

We are home to specialists in the languages, literatures, history, and visual culture of the Nordic world from medieval times to the present day. We are also home to Norvik Press, the UK's only press specialising in Nordic literature and culture, as well as the Viking Society for Northern Research, the oldest and largest society in the world dedicated to the study of Viking and medieval Scandinavia.

We offer dedicated BA degrees in Viking and Old Norse Studies, Scandinavian Studies, and Icelandic Studies, along with a number of combined language degrees, including BA Language and Culture, joint honours languages, and modern languages with Management Studies, Film Studies, Philosophy, History of Art, and Comparative Literature.

At postgraduate level we offer an MA in Language, Culture and History: Scandinavian Studies; we also contribute to UCL’s numerous interdisciplinary MA programmes, including the MA in Medieval and Renaissance Studies.

About the role

We are looking for a candidate to teach approximately 320 contact hours over an academic year, primarily in Norwegian language at undergraduate level, and Comparative Literature at BA and/or MA level. Core teaching will include the following modules: ‘Introduction to Norwegian Language and Culture’ and ‘Intermediate Norwegian Language and Culture’.

The post holder will also contribute to teaching and BA and/or MA-level dissertation supervision on Scandinavian literature, culture and history, and Comparative Literature. The post holder will also assist in the examination of other Scandinavian-language modules as part of the Scandinavian language teaching team, and participate in programme-related activities, events and student recruitment.

The post holder is entitled to devote 15 per cent of their working hours to scholarship and/or research, and will be welcome to participate in our Research Clusters, research seminar series, public engagement initiatives, and other events and projects.

This is a full-time post. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the position from 1 September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About you

The successful candidate will have at least a postgraduate qualification (Master’s degree or equivalent) within the area of Norwegian Teaching as an Additional Language and/or Norwegian Linguistics and/or Translation in a Nordic context and/or Nordic Studies.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a PhD (completed or close to completion) in Norwegian Language or Literature, Nordic Studies, Translation, Comparative Literature, or another subject relevant to teaching in SELCS-CMII.

They will be completely fluent in Norwegian and English and have expert knowledge of literary theory and history, sufficient to teach Comparative Literature at BA level.

The post holder will have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills when dealing with both colleagues and students, excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage time and work to strict deadlines. They will also be committed to high-quality teaching.

Please see the job description for full details.
