The Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals’ NHS Trust is excited to be able to offer opportunities for motivated doctors to join our friendly Children and Young People’s (CYP) Emergency Department team.

Depending on your experience, you will be appointed to a Junior Fellow role (equivalent to CT1, CT2 or CT3) or on our ST4+ equivalent rota. You may be considered for the Senior Fellow role if full MRCEM or MRCPCH is held at the time of applying.

These posts are ideal opportunities for anyone wishing to gain more experience or exposure in Paediatric ED prior to an application to a National Training Programme or a joining a local CESR programme.

You will have the opportunity to work in a forward thinking, dynamic department which is committed to the Trust’s ambition of developing staff and delivering outstanding healthcare outcomes for patients

Working in our CYPED encompasses many management skills such as managing the shop floor, keeping to the four hour target and constant reprioritisation of tasks.

You will be supported to work through competencies to develop portfolio evidence to meet your set objectives and will work under the clinical direction of CYPED Consultants who are present in the department 24/7. You will be allocated an Educational and Clinical supervisor

Located in one of the friendliest and greenest cities in the UK, Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH) is a Major Trauma Centre and our ED is one of the busiest in Europe, seeing 179,940 new patients a year across co-located adult and Childrens and Young People's departments.

NUH consists of the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and the Nottingham City Hospital Campuses. QMC houses our Emergency Department which has co-located adult and children’s units. NUH is the Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands region.

Our forward thinking, research active Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Europe with 195,000 new attendances annually. The Children’s ED sees 44,000 children and young people and has expanded its resuscitation capability with a major capital investment.

Nottingham is a haven for sports lovers and nature lovers. It is home to two famous football teams, an ice hockey team, an annual tennis open and boasts a test cricket ground and the National Ice and Water Sports Centres. These are service posts so do not have educational approval, but you will be provided with excellent training and educational opportunities, tailored to meet your individual needs.

We expect that you will keep yourself up to date with current knowledge and practice, attend clinical meetings within the department and to participate in audit and in service training of other professionals.

Clinical Fellows in the CYPED can expect to:
Build on previous experience and develop increased expertise in the identification, assessment and management of sick patients

Gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, with appropriated decision making around need for admission and discharge +/- primary care/specialty follow up

Gain experience and familiarity in managing poly-trauma patients and the concept of ‘silver trauma’

Have opportunities to acquire additional skills such as fascia iliaca block, chest drain etc

To enhance your communication skills with patients relatives and colleagues

To keep up to date with mandatory training required for your role

To participate in the annual appraisal process

We have successfully supported many doctors who have come to work with us to gain places on training programmes, just let us know if this is your aim and we’ll do everything we can to help you get there.

For doctors with no NHS experience, we will welcome you on our IMG induction programme providing prescribing sessions, clinical skills and much more during these sessions. You will also have a shadowing period in the department and time given in the first couple of weeks to attend any settling in appointments you may need to or view accommodation etc.
