We are seeking to recruit a Highways Officer based at our Highways Office in Whitby.

We are proud to manage all the aspects of the highway network that we look after in the east of North Yorkshire, including Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and the many pretty villages such as Goathland and Grosmont. Working in areas including parts of the Yorkshire Wolds and the North York Moors National Park and the East Coast, but with good road and rail links to York and beyond.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to further develop their career and management skills within the Highways Service and the Council, showcase their potential and grow and develop themselves.

We work hybridly, with a mixture of working from home and from our offices in Whitby and Scarborough.

About the Role:
As a Highways Officer, you will be responsible for inspecting the road network to ensure it remains safe for all highway users. You’ll use your knowledge and judgement to prioritise repairs, raise works orders for our contractors, and carry out emergency or small-scale repairs when needed.

This role involves working independently, often in the community, and requires regular interaction with the general public, Councillors, and other stakeholders. You’ll also be part of a winter maintenance rota, monitoring the network for hazards outside of normal working hours. You will be provided with a van to support on-call duties.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Inspecting roads and highways to identify safety issues and maintenance needs.
  • Raising accurate works orders using computer systems.
  • Carrying out minor manual repairs and responding to emergencies.
  • Participating in a winter standby rota to monitor and respond to network hazards.
  • Engaging with the public and stakeholders in a professional and approachable manner.

What you can Bring:
  • Experience in highways or civil engineering works.
  • Computer literacy – ability to use systems to log inspections and raise orders.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own time effectively.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to take initiative.
  • A full UK driving licence – essential for this role.

Why Join Us?
  • Be part of a supportive, community-focused team.
  • Work in the scenic and historic town of Whitby, with access to the North Yorkshire coast and countryside.
  • Receive full training and development opportunities.

In addition to your salary, you will also gain access to;
  • a local government pension scheme with 18.1% employer contribution
  • salary sacrifice schemes
  • employee discount benefits including shopping, supermarkets, gym discounts and more!
  • travel loans
  • Health Assured – confidential help and support for your wellbeing
