Foundation Studies at SGS College has an excellent reputation for delivering an outstanding curriculum of Life Skills and Employability to students who may need more time to acquire the skills they need for independent living, further study and employment.

To maintain the growth of provision within our department and to support various new projects, we are looking for a self-motivated individual who can confidently teach Entry to Level One across various subject areas including Employability, Life Skills, English/maths and Vocational Studies a specialism/interest in Horticulture or Catering would be especially beneficial.

Our learners need innovative and creative teaching methods to encourage and engage learning. If you are passionate about teaching and learning, are able to translate this to your students using a range of effective strategies, you will enjoy being part of a committed team. You should feel confident working with challenging behaviours, Special Educational Needs and disability and SEMH.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Under the supervision of the Learning Area Manager, and working with the other tutors in Department, to plan and deliver a curriculum to include Life skills, social skills, vocational studies, employability, maths and English.
  • Completing an initial assessment with each student to establish the correct levels to be undertaken and agreeing the target timescale for completion in line with College guidelines.
  • Providing learners with the skills and knowledge where necessary to help them pass the functional skills requirements of the framework which may include English, Maths and ICT through their main lessons.
  • Following the guidance issued by both the Awarding Body and the College with regard to assessment practice and the completion of documentation, and to engage in Internal Verification and standardisation meetings throughout the year.
  • Maintain appropriate Continuing Professional Development, including the attendance on all training events identified for you by the Learning Area Manager, to ensure the highest standards of quality in your teaching/assessing.

  • Willingness to collaborate and work closely with colleagues in a mutually supportive manner.
Beneficial Skills & Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent or have substantial relevant SEND experience.
  • Teaching qualification or willing to be working towards - You will be required to obtain a Stage 3 full professional qualification (PGCE in post-16 education or equivalent) within 2-4 years of commencing lecturing duties within the College
  • GCSE Maths and English grade C or above or Level 2 equivalent
  • Experience working with entry to level 1 learners with SEND and SEMH
  • Qualifications/CPD related to working with learners with learning disabilities
  • Experience of working in Further Education or schools supporting learners with learning disabilities
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of using Office software packages, email and web browsers
