Experienced Gardener
An experienced Gardener is sought to join the existing horticultural team at Scampston Hall & Walled Garden near Malton, North Yorkshire.
This is a rare opportunity to work at Scampston Walled Garden, a contemporary walled garden which sits within the grounds of historic Scampston Hall. The garden has been designed by the renowned Dutch plantsman, Piet Oudolf, and has received international acclaim. Scampston Walled Garden is open to the public from the end of March until the end of October each year, attracting visitors from all around the world.
The Role
As an Experienced Gardener, in conjunction with the Head Gardener, garden team and volunteers, you will be responsible for assisting with the day to day maintenance of the garden & grounds at Scampston. This extends to all aspects of garden maintenance, including the following:
- Lawn care and maintenance
- Hedge cutting, seed propagation and glasshouse work
- Vegetables and cut flowers, shrub and herbaceous border work, including pruning, weeding, and leaf collection
- Operate and maintain gardening equipment and tools safely.
- Be ambassadors for Scampston and provide excellent customer service when interacting with visitors.
Qualities, Skills & Experience
Applications are sought from suitably qualified and experienced Gardeners who have attained RHS Level 2, or an equivalent Horticultural qualification. You should have a good working knowledge of plants and horticultural best practices.
Ideally, you will be experienced with a range of machinery, however training will be given to the right person where necessary.
You will be joining a small, busy team of experienced gardeners. You should have the ability to work with others and be able to contribute to the success of the garden progression. Good communication skills are essential along with self-motivation and a can-do attitude.
The job is outdoors, with the requirement to work in all weathers and is physically demanding. All weather and protective clothing and PPE will be provided.

- Hardworking, reliable, punctual with good attention to detail
- Polite, with excellent communication skills
- Be physically fit and be prepared to work outdoors in all weathers
- Able to work on your own initiative and under instructions as part of a team
- Spray certificate preferred but training can be provided
- Ability to commute/relocate before start date is essential
- Full driving license

This is a permanent position, working hours are 8:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday to Thursday and 8am – 3:30pm on Fridays (weekend watering on a rota with time in Lieu).
