Role Overview
This role focuses on leading a department (toddler, or preschool room), implementing the EYFS framework, and supporting both children and staff within that room.
Key Responsibilities
The Head of Department takes the lead in delivering high-quality learning and care experiences for a specific age group, in line with the EYFS framework.
They are responsible for managing the department’s day-to-day operations, supervising a small team of practitioners, and fostering a safe, stimulating, and inclusive environment for all children.
This role is ideal for an experienced Early Years Educator ready to step into a leadership role within a supportive and professionally ambitious nursery setting.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Lead a team of Early Years Practitioners and support staff within your designated department (Baby/Toddler/Preschool).
- Plan and oversee the daily routine, activities, and educational planning in line with EYFS.
- Delegate tasks and ensure staff are clear on their responsibilities and expectations.
Teaching & Learning
- Deliver a broad and balanced curriculum that supports each child’s development and learning journey.
- Use observations and assessments to track children’s progress and plan next steps.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date learning journals/online profiles (e.g., Tapestry/Famly).
Safeguarding & Welfare
- Ensure the department operates in full compliance with safeguarding, health and safety, and EYFS welfare requirements.
- Maintain clean, safe, and stimulating learning environments with age-appropriate resources.
- Ensure all children’s physical, emotional, and developmental needs are met.
Parent & Team Communication
- Build strong relationships with parents and carers through daily updates and regular meetings.
- Liaise with the leadership team regarding department performance, child progress, and concerns.
- Contribute to the induction and mentoring of new staff, students, and apprentices.
Compliance & Quality
- Support with internal quality audits, Ofsted readiness, and health & safety procedures.
- Maintain child: staff ratios and ensure policies and procedures are followed consistently.
- Work collaboratively with SENDCO and other leaders for inclusive practice.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Level 3 qualification in Early Years Education (or equivalent).
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a nursery or early years setting.
- Sound knowledge of the EYFS framework and child development.
- Experience in planning activities and leading small groups.
- Enhanced DBS check and a strong commitment to safeguarding.
Desirable:
- Paediatric First Aid and Safeguarding certificates (or willingness to train).
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff or apprentices.
- Familiarity with EYFS tracking tools or digital learning platforms (e.g., Tapestry, Famly).
- SEN awareness or additional qualifications in early years leadership.

Pay: £12.61-£13.00 per hour
