The Centre for Criminology in the Faculty of Law is looking to appoint a suitably qualified early career academic to a 16-month Departmental Lectureship in Criminology. This is to cover Dr Leila Ullrich while they are on leave funded by a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship. The post-holder will be expected to undertake research; to teach and assess students on the third-year undergraduate criminology option and on the MSc in Criminology & Criminal Justice; and to support the work of the Centre for Criminology. The Departmental Lecturer will work under the supervision of the Director of the Centre for Criminology, which from 1st September 2025 will be Professor Rachel Condry.
The postholder will be required to contribute to the core theory/criminal justice and/or methods courses and contribute to/deliver up to three seminar-based options on the MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice as required; organize and deliver seminars for the third-year undergraduate law option ‘Criminology and Criminal Justice’; supervise the dissertations of MSc students in Criminology; engage in assessment and university examining; and take an active part in the work and community building of the Centre for Criminology under the direction of the Director of the Centre, including acting (if so requested) as a member of the Board of Studies and/or other committees of the Centre or the Faculty of Law. The postholder will also be expected and supported to undertake academic research and publication.
Applicants should have excellent knowledge and understanding of criminology and criminal justice; have completed a doctorate in criminology or a related field of social science by 1st September 2025; experience of university teaching at an undergraduate or postgraduate level and demonstrated capacity to make a substantial and significant contribution to research, and for publication of the outcome of research, in criminology.
The post is full time and fixed term until 31 December 2026 and will be based at the Centre for Criminology, Faculty of Law, St Cross Building, St Cross Road, Oxford, OX1 3UL
