To proactively engage patients whilst they are waiting in the Emergency Department into the project.
To provide evidence-based behavioural support and advice to hep smokers to swap to using vapes.
To assist in the management of the vapes stocks by recording and monitoring usage and accurately updating records.
To keep accurate and detailed records of the interventions that were provided.
To liaise with the community stop smoking team and the inpatient tobacco dependence treatment teams.
To proactively support colleagues awareness of the project.
To help design and distribute promotional materials.

Job Summary:
The key function of this job is to support the smooth, efficient, and effective running of the Lewisham Stop Smoking Service (SSS) and Tobacco Dependence Treatment (TDT) service . The post holder is responsible for supporting the SSS /TDT Team s to deliver stop smoking interventions in acute and community settings. These include the delivery of the smoking element of the NHS long-term plan, the targeted Lung Health Checks and COSTED projects , a s well as support ing the engagement of the community to encourage quit attempts .
The post-holder will assist the department in the efficient running and delivery of targeted stop smoking interventions in acute and community settings across L GT services . They will independently carry out assessments with patients to identif y them as current smokers who wish to access support to quit smoking, they will initiate treatments, and make referrals into clinical support . They will be expected to work under their own initiative but with access to support and supervision from senior colleagues.
They will provide a key role in the management of adults who smoke in the borough by acting as an interface between project work and clinical delivery . The post-holder will have a good knowledge of smoking cessation, including the practical and safety aspects of smoking cessation brief advice as well as NRT provision. Under the supervision of the smoking cessation practitioners, they will enter data as required , contributing to patient’s assessment and progress through the service. They will support with administrative tasks as needed and be responsible for the regular maintenance of smoking cessation equipment.
To proactively engage smokers accessing LGT services and those who live in local communities to create awareness of the local and regional stop smoking interventions, to p romote the service , and to encourage smokers to access the available treatment services. On the hospital sites, this includes patients, staff, and visitors to reinforce the ward-based TDT interventions and smokefree grounds policy.
The post holder will assist in the triaging of referrals to the smoking cessation service and complete face to face and telephone reviews as required . The post holder is expected to always maintain complete confidentiality.
Accountable to the Stop Smoking Team Lead /TDT specialists .
To screen, advise, support and refer patients during admissions/ outreach activities so they can become s mokefree.
To contribute to the smooth running of the service, supporting the Team and other colleagues
Key Result Areas & Performance :
To provide a smoking cessation service to LG T patients, staff, and local residents with appropriate therapeutic advice and interventions in the community .
Ensure that Very Brief Advice is delivered effectively , stop smoking medication s and vapes are routinely offer ed , and that patients are aware of available stop smoking services. Ensure that everyone who expresses an interest in stopping smoking is given information to understand what services can be offered to them and are supported following local procedures .
To utilise excellent communication skills when instructing patients in the use of Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring equipment, safety aspects of nicotine withdrawal and replacement management. Be able to communicate sensitively with patients who may be suffering from severe ill health (heart failure, COPD, cancer) or have barriers to understanding (e.g. CVA, poor cognition).
To work as a part of a project team to deliver services to distinct groups.
Assist in the delivery of Brief Intervention training and other training sessions for staff related to smoking cessation.
Assist and contribute to other educational events/promotions provided by the Trust and across the Borough.
To have a good working knowledge of IT systems and be able to enter and update information on the relevant IT system as required .
To provide short-term cover for SSS /TDT tea m colleagues during periods of leave
To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best service for patients.
Keep informed of developments and innovation in practice and ensure all training information is up to date and evidence based.
Participate in the development of the Community Stop Smoking Service and Tobacco Dependence Treatment Team .
Provide effective stop smoking support for Trust staff who want to stop smoking.
To proactively engage with stakeholders and key partners and to represent the team while promoting the service.
To arrange meetings, taking messages and facilitating communication across all sites involved as required .
To be available to help train new staff in the use of the IT systems and all local databases.
Flexible working to cover all duties , organising own day to day work, multi-tasking as necessary , and able to travel across the borough to work in a variety of locations, as required .
To undertake any other duties commensurate with the job where needed to ensure the smooth and effective running of the service as and when required .
Support the Trust and other organisations to develop a smokefree culture .
