Communications Officer
Salary: £32,671 - £38,717 (£24,921 - £28,302 + shift and weekend working allowance)
Location: Fulford Road, Force Control Room, York
Hours: Full-time (7am-7pm days, 7pm-7am nights)
Shift Pattern: Rotating shifts 2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off
Contract: Permanent
Are you looking for a rewarding career where every day presents new challenges? Join us at North Yorkshire Police as a Communications Officer in our Force Control Room, where you will play a critical role in supporting the public and ensuring a swift police response.
What You'll Do:
- Be the first point of contact for emergency 999 and non-emergency calls, providing professional and customer-focused support.
- Assess, prioritise, and triage calls based on urgency and available resources.
- Work with colleagues across North Yorkshire to coordinate police responses efficiently.
- Create accurate records of reported incidents in real-time, supporting effective deployment of officers.
- Facilitate communication with callers who speak little or no English, ensuring accessibility for all communities.
- Use police systems to record information related to crimes, domestic violence, road traffic collisions, and missing persons.
- Conduct Police National Computer enquiries, such as vehicle and name checks, to assist officers.
- Handle online reporting and provide guidance to members of the public.

Key Requirements:
- No previous experience is necessary; we are looking for individuals with common sense, strong IT and typing skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication abilities.
- Willingness to work a 24/7 shift pattern of 12-hour shifts on a 4 on, 4 off rotations.
- Emotional resilience and the ability to handle sensitive situations professionally.
Training & Start Dates:
- You will complete 10 weeks of training. Due to the comprehensive nature of the training, holidays cannot be taken during this period.
- Start date will be April 2026
