Join Our Team as a City Centre & Markets Maintenance Operative
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dedicated City Centre Management Team as a City Centre & Markets Maintenance Operative, working within the vibrant heart of Sheffield.
We are looking for a motivated and versatile individual to support the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of Sheffields City Centre and Market facilities. This vital role helps ensure our public spaces remain clean, safe, and welcoming for all.
As a Maintenance Operative, you will work across a variety of sites, performing scheduled and responsive maintenance duties. You will support a wide range of services from building repairs and street-scene enhancements to maintaining water features and assisting with events. Your work will contribute to delivering a high-quality environment that reflects Sheffields commitment to its residents and visitors.
What You & Will Be Doing:
- Carrying out preventative maintenance and minor repairs across Market buildings and city centre facilities.
- Supporting water feature operations by conducting daily safety and quality checks, maintenance and cleaning.
- Assisting with graffiti removal, fly-poster clearing, painting, bin installations, and event setup/pack-down.
- Working at heights, inspecting play areas, helping with horticultural tasks, and managing irrigation systems.
- Participating in out-of-hours callouts and flexible working rosters, including weekends.
What we are looking for:
- A practical, hands-on approach and experience in maintenance or building repair.
- Basic IT and record-keeping skills.
- Confidence in working independently or as part of a team.
- A working knowledge of health and safety, with the ability to respond calmly in emergencies.
- Willingness to train in specific areas, including Pool Plant Operation certification if not already held.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.
If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide pay slip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
