Fen Farm is a well-established, family-run artisan cheese company based in Bungay, Suffolk, dedicated to producing high-quality cheeses with locally sourced ingredients. Our commitment to traditional methods and sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.
We are looking for a dedicated, hands-on Cheese Operative to join our production team. This role is integral to the daily operations of our cheese-making process—from milk intake to final maturation. The successful candidate will work across all stages of production, ensuring the highest quality and food safety standards are upheld at all times. Full training will be given.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the production of our award winning Baron Bigod cheese, including renneting, curd cutting, ladling, salting, turning and lots and lots of cleaning.
- Accurately follow production procedures
- Conduct routine pH & temperature checks and accurate recording of data.
- Monitor and document hygiene standards in line with HACCP protocols
- Maintain clean and safe working environment in production areas
- Identify and report equipment faults or production issues promptly
Person Specification
Essential:
- Strong attention to detail and hygiene
- Willingness to learn all aspects of the cheesemaking process.
- Reliable and punctual with a team-first attitude
- Basic numeracy, literacy and some IT skills
- Able to follow procedures consistently and responsibly
- This position involves repetitive manual tasks and requires applicants to be comfortable with the following:
- Heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs) regularly throughout the day
- Standing for extended periods (6–8 hours)
- Manual dexterity for handling delicate processes like curd cutting and cheese molding
- Frequent bending, stretching, reaching, and twisting during production and cleaning
- Working in cold, humid environments such as aging rooms
Desirable:
- Experience working in a food production or dairy environment
- Food Hygiene Level 2 (or willing to undertake training)
- Forklift or pallet truck experience
- A passion for artisan food and sustainable production

Pay: From £12.21 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
