Job Description
Are you looking for a dynamic case management role and an opportunity to develop skills in diverse areas such as risk management, whilst contributing to the management of restricted patients in Scotland?
An opportunity has arisen for a capable, committed individual to join the Restricted Patient Team as a Case Manager - a challenging, interesting, varied role in a supportive, friendly unit. We support Scottish Ministers in discharging their responsibilities in the oversight of restricted patients – mentally disordered offenders sent to hospital by the courts, or prisoners transferred to hospital.
This post sits within a busy and committed team. The Team Leader is supported by two Senior Casework Development Leads and the team consists of four Senior Casework Managers, seven Casework Managers (including this post) and five hub members. Each Case Manager is responsible for managing a caseload of restricted patients.
When considering this post, the nature of the work means that you will be required to consider sensitive, often graphic, background/offence details. Accessible support is available, but it is important to consider this when applying.
Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload on behalf of Scottish Ministers with the overall objective of preventing risk of serious harm to the public, taking account of the rights of the patient and others.
- Request reports, prepare productions and draft representations in advance of Mental Health Tribunal hearings.
- Review/action incoming reports received from clinical teams, thinking critically to identify key issues, escalating risks as appropriate.
- Liaise with managers, Principal Medical Officer (Forensic Psychiatry) and SGLD on individual cases, ensuring the referral recipient has all key information and proposals for next steps; providing direction to the team’s Administrative Hub Support when their action is required.
- Produce high quality, written submissions to the Minister making recommendations based on the accurate analysis of (often complex) multi-disciplinary team information and feedback.
- Manage critical incidents, i.e. absconding, in line with current guidance/timescales.
- Build effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders, including Police Scotland, MAPPA, clinical teams, Ministers and senior colleagues – attending meetings and case reviews virtually and in-person where required.
- Assess/process cross border transfer requests for restricted and non-restricted patients.
- Updating internal systems such as ERDM, Database and case filing/information systems and processes to ensure that accurate records are maintained, priorities are identified and managed.
- Contribute to the continued improvement of processes and procedures within the Team.
- Provide out-of-hours cover as part of a rota. Currently, this involves being on-call evenings/weekends approximately one week in every 12 weeks, for which you can claim on-call allowance and overtime payments. (Training will be given and there are clear instructions on what to do in different situations, with telephone support available).
