**Job Description**

**Whitehall editor**

The Times is looking for a Whitehall editor to join our team in Westminster.

You will need to be an outstanding political journalist with the ability to write engaging and informative copy.

We are looking for someone with experience of working in lobby, an extensive network of contacts in Westminster and Whitehall and a track record of breaking exclusives.

**Responsibilities:**

+ Bring in regular exclusives and maintain excellent contacts in government and the civil service.

+ Getting to grips with the intricacies of government policies and the debates and discussions surrounding them.

+ An ability to put readers inside the room, giving them an insight into Cabinet disputes and tensions.

+ An ability to write both stories and analysis in a distinctive and engaging way.

+ Command respect and authority as Whitehall editor and communicate your expertise effectively in print, digital, radio and television as a representative of The Times

+ Be a self-starter and pitch strong ideas for all sections

+ Have a strong knowledge of social media and an ability to use it to increase our readership

+ Regularly pitch and contribute to digital packages that increase engagement and support subscriber growth

+ Collaborate with production colleagues in design, pictures and sub-editing on elements that enhance the stories you write

**Skills and experience:**

+ Experience of working as an established political journalist for an established news organisation.

+ Demonstrable expertise in politics, policy and the workings of the civil service

+ An understanding of how audience data supports editorial decisions and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines

+ An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy

+ Ability to communicate succinctly and effectively

+ Experience working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams

+ Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve

+ A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
