Job Description
Job Purpose / Overview
- Support Nuclear Plant Construction Programmes and Quality Delivery Managers in supervising welding and allied activities.
- Liaise with and guide Contract Partners to achieve welding excellence on a licensed nuclear construction site.
- Ensure day-to-day welding quality is consistently high.
- Support and motivate welders to deliver top-quality work with the right tools and environment.
- Report to SME Team Leader on welding, pipework erection, heat treatment, and stress mitigation.
Operating Environment
- Role based at a nuclear site in West Somerset, 15 miles from Bridgwater.
- Requires experience leading welding on large, regulated projects.
- Work collaboratively with Contract Partners and other site functions.
- Strong soft skills essential to influence, support, and maintain top-quality standards.
Framework & Boundaries
- Operates within the Joint Design Office (JDO) Technical Branch.
- Interfaces with Inspection & Testing teams and Project Delivery Managers across 6 programmes.
- Focused on welding and welded erection compliance and quality.
Principal Accountabilities
- Guide Contract Partners in planning and resourcing welding activities.
- Ensure prior qualification of welders and welding procedures.
- Verify training and compliance with site and UK-specific regulations.
- Maintain quality-focused environments to minimise welding defects.
- Identify and implement improvements to welding processes.
- Enforce strict adherence to safety requirements.
- Support Contract Partners in resolving challenges.
- Compile and analyse welding/erection statistics to drive continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Essential
- Expert Welding Engineer, with experience of leading and developing welding activities on large projects
- Significant experience of welding and erection activities on large projects
- Proven ability to engage Senior Management and variety of stakeholders to work in the interest of attaining high quality welding with low defect rates
- Ability to contribute to the management of a high performing team that continuously outperforms expectations and objectives
- Understanding of Quality Management Systems and experience of the application of ISO 9001 standard in a construction, engineering or industrial context.
- Have a sympathetic and observant work presence that gains respect and cooperation of work groups
- Be able to write informative, concise and meaningful reports
- Possess excellent organisation and communication skills
Desirable
- Education to degree level or a proven record of academic knowledge in mechanical and or materials related subject. This could include HND or NVQ level 4.
- Experience as a welder or skilled mechanical craftsman
- Previous experience working in the nuclear or a similarly regulated industry would be highly valued
- Ability to identify and work with teams of skilled craftsmen.
