About Marshmallow
We build financial products that accelerate the economic freedom for people who move across borders. We started with car insurance — insuring over a million drivers — and we’re scaling beyond. Tens of millions of people move countries each year, facing overlooked financial challenges. Our future is in building financial products around their needs to positively impact their lives.
How we work
We’re really proud of the culture we’ve created. We push for progress every day, because we know that we’ll only hit big milestones by taking lots of smaller steps. We’re always open to helping our team mates, sharing our ideas, experience and knowledge to solve problems together. We take risks, think creatively and experiment relentlessly to meet our customer’s needs, and never pass blame when things go wrong. We encourage people at all levels to take ownership of their work, and to be bold in challenging how we do things. Everyone has a voice and the opportunity to make an impact.
And autonomy and ownership are only possible with clear direction. That’s why we collaborate to do in-depth planning twice a year, and make sure we leave with clear goals and objectives that flow from top to bottom. To make sure we’re as aligned as possible across functions, most of our work rolls up into three tribes; Acquisition, Retention & Claims. Each tribe has multiple teams embedded in it, working cross-functionally to do great work.
We’re so excited for all of the challenges up ahead, and we need more people to help us tackle them! If life at Marshmallow sounds like it could be for you, explore our Culture Handbook to find out more.
The Underwriting team
Underwriters at Marshmallow are primarily responsible for managing the risk associated with our products by establishing clear rules and robust processes to deliver the targeted loss ratio and protect the business from risk. We achieve this through meticulous management of clear policy wordings, acceptance criteria and underwriting guidelines. In addition to this, our Underwriters are expected to be commercially driven and to have a keen eye on key performance metrics as well as the rest of the market, in the interest of identifying ways we can improve our product offering for our customers.
The team is responsible for our established motor insurance offering across Private Car and Van, as well as the upcoming release of household insurance.
Job Overview
We’re looking for a motivated, proactive and detail-oriented Underwriter to join our Underwriting Team. This role will primarily focus on our upcoming release of household insurance, although responsibilities will span both product areas as needed.
This role involves taking ownership of queries from across the business, supporting the development and rollout of new products and services, managing key underwriting documentation, conducting underwriting audits, and overseeing indemnity decisions. The Underwriter will also hold overarching responsibility for managing customer risk through a range of underwriting-driven initiatives.
What you’ll be doing
Underwriters are a key point of contact for all customer-facing teams, providing expert guidance and handling escalated queries. You’ll need to confidently interpret and communicate underwriting guidelines and criteria in a clear, concise manner.
You’ll conduct audits on new business and renewal policies, using insights to inform conversations around emerging trends, fraud detection, and compliance with pricing rules.
You’ll be responsible for maintaining and updating all policy documentation, ensuring alignment with both market developments and evolving Marshmallow products and processes.
Underwriters own the remedies and communications used for indemnity purposes. This requires you to have an excellent level of knowledge with respect to our claims appetite, policy wording, underwriting guidelines and insurance legislation such as CIDRA and ICOBS.
You’ll also play a pivotal role in shaping our underwriting footprint, evaluating risk at the individual level, and recommending mitigation strategies.
As we gear up to launch Marshmallow Home Insurance, you’ll play a key role in shaping the supporting processes and educating teams across the business on the distinct features and considerations of household insurance, which is crucial in a company historically focused on motor insurance.
Finally, as a subject matter expert, you’ll provide valuable regulatory, market, and industry insights to teams across the business, supporting informed decision-making company-wide.
What we're looking for from you
You currently work, or have previously worked, within a household insurance setting covering buildings and/or contents, either directly within an Underwriting Team or in a role that involves close collaboration with underwriters, where you regularly apply home insurance terminology and principles in practice.
You work well in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change quickly in line with opportunities and challenges presented by the market. This requires an ability to adapt and thrive under pressure.
You have a keen interest in Underwriting, specifically working for a market disruptor. You believe in our mission and want to make insurance more accessible.
Excellent written English and strong verbal communication skills, which you’re eager to display in proposals and presentations.
You like to take ownership of your work and work well both autonomously and collaboratively with the team and your stakeholders.
You are able to effectively educate others about subjects you’re confident in, such as insurance, risk and regulation.
You have an interest in, or have started working towards, your CII qualifications.
You have a growth mindset and are comfortable providing and receiving feedback in a constructive, respectful way. In the Underwriting Team, collaboration is essential; we actively challenge each other’s ideas to drive the best possible outcomes and continuously improve how we work.
Our Process
We break it up into 3 stages:
Initial call with our Talent team (30 mins)
An online written task
A skill-based interview where you will discuss your previous experience etc. with Katie Williams, Senior Underwriter (1 hour)
A culture interview to check that your work style fits our processes and values with Paula, Insurance Director (1 hour)
We’ll let you know if you’re invited to an interview or not. But, as a small team with a lot of applications to consider, we can’t give personal feedback on each application.
