About What About Now?
What About Now? is a mental health charity using lived experience to improve support for individuals and families. Our current initiatives are based in the London Borough of Bromley, and we’re preparing to grow our impact nationwide. For more information about us visit www.whataboutnow.co.uk
The role
As a Trustee, you’ll help set our strategy, ensure strong governance, and steward our growth beyond Bromley. You’ll work with fellow Trustees and the leadership team to keep our work safe, impactful, and sustainable.
Key responsibilities
- Provide strategic oversight and support the charity’s expansion from local to national reach.
- Ensure good governance, risk management, and compliance with Charity Commission requirements.
- Safeguard our values: trauma-informed practice, inclusion, and lived-experience leadership.
- Support financial oversight (budgets, reserves, reporting) and robust internal controls.
- Act as an ambassador for the charity; open doors to partnerships and funding opportunities.
- Contribute your expertise to projects or sub-committees (e.g., fundraising, digital/IT, communications).
Who we’re looking for
- A genuine commitment to mental health and our mission. Lived experience (your own or as a supporter/carer) is warmly welcomed.
- Sound judgment, integrity, and the ability to work as part of a supportive board.
- Desirable but not essential: knowledge or interest in fundraising, finance, or IT/digital. We also value skills in HR/people, safeguarding, legal, data protection, or comms.
- No previous trustee experience required — training and induction provided.
Practicalities
- Open to candidates across the UK; proximity to Bromley is helpful but not essential.
- Meetings are hybrid; reasonable travel and out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed.
- We can provide reasonable adjustments throughout application and service.
Eligibility & Safeguarding
- You must be 18+ and eligible to serve as a charity trustee in the UK (not disqualified under the Charities Act).
- Appointment is subject to references and, where appropriate, a basic/standard DBS check.
