Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Gloucester, England
Full time
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Trust Grade doctor to join our Emergency Medicine team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. You will be working within the Tier 2/ SHO rota, with an expectation of working a range of shift types, including night shifts. The role can be flexible around other academic or clinical commitments.

This role involves delivering care across adult and paediatric acute presentations, and managing trauma cases. You will work across the department, within adult majors and minors, the Children’s ED and in resus. As a Trust Grade doctor, you will be responsible for the initial assessment of patients, provision of immediate care as is necessary, and formulating and enacting an initial management plan in conjunction with more senior clinicians.

The applicant will be well led with excellent clinical supervision by senior staff during all shifts. You will be allocated a Consultant Mentor and Educational Supervisor to support and guide your professional development during your time with us.

Successful applicants will be welcomed into our vibrant and friendly multi-disciplinary team. There is a strong emphasis in team-work in our EDs and we work closely in collaboration with the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and Intensive Care.

1. Clinical Responsibilities/Key Responsibilities

2. Professional Development, Education and Training

3. Research and Development

4. Communications and Working Relationships

The Emergency Departments within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust receive approximately 150,000 patients per year making us one of the largest units in the South West.

Gloucestershire Royal ED is an accredited Level 2 Trauma Unit, receiving the most trauma cases of all Trauma Units in the region. Within GRH ED there is a dedicated Pediatric Emergency area that receives ill and injured children.

Pediatric attendances constitute approximately 25% of all our attendances. There is Emergency Medicine Consultant supervision from 8am until midnight, seven days per week in GRH.

CGH ED receives emergency patients by ambulance until 8pm each day, after which the ambulance patients attend GRH. There is Consultant supervision in the ED at CGH until 10pm each weekday and until 5pm at weekends (where a senior Emergency Medicine clinician is present until 10pm). In addition, Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) receives those patients suffering from acute stroke with an active stroke thrombolysis service.

You will need at least two years of postgraduate experience in a range of medical and surgical specialties (e.g. the UK Foundation programme), and previous experience of working within the NHS. You must have previous experience of managing acute adult medical and surgical presentations, with some experience of assessing and managing children. Emergency Medicine requires a degree of autonomy, and although you will be well supported by senior doctors on every shift, you must be comfortable with the initial management of critical cases, and possess suitable communication and interpersonal skills to work within a large multi-disciplinary team.
