Havencare is a forward-thinking and growing charity. We have been making a difference for 35 years, changing the lives of people who have learning disabilities, autism, brain injuries, and other support needs. Our big aims include every person having a home that is right for them, and support for the life they choose.
We currently have two great opportunities to work in a supported living service supporting two gentleman (Mr B and Mr J) who moved into their home just over two years ago.
We are looking for two part-time support workers to work within an existing team supporting Mr B to rediscover his zest for life. However, there may be a requirement and need to support both individuals as part of a team.
About Mr B and Mr J:
Mr B is a man with a diagnosis of Autism in his late 50's. Although both individuals have a good understanding of spoken communication, they use Makaton sign language and other visual based communication styles to make wishes and preferences known.
Mr B enjoys going out for a cup of coffee and listening to 80s music whilst Mr J enjoys relaxing in the garden, watching TV or going for a drive with the windows down and the wind blowing through his hair. Both Mr B and Mr J are encouraged to go out in the fresh air to enjoy a walk or two when the weather is agreeable.
As a team, we are constantly working to identify activities that both individuals can enjoy are meaningful to them both.
Both individuals have some obsessive behaviours and can communicate through these behaviours. To help them cope with a world that can be confusing to them, they both have their own copying strategies and the team have worked hard with health professionals to understand and support both men to feel safe.
The individuals we support need a consistent and relaxed yet observant approach to pick up on the small communication cues which you will notice more as you continue to support both gentleman. We are looking for people who will be a positive advocate for each individual, providing support during both the good times and the more difficult times.
Both individuals show a preference for people who are fun, able to think outside the box, with a kind and patient personality who above all are happy to get to know and understand each of the individuals as they would like to be.
Essential: A full UK Drivers Licence is required for this role.
About the working pattern:
We work over a 2-week rolling rota and are looking to recruit two part-time support staff to join our team. This is due to Mr B's changing needs and increasing physical support due to mobility concerns. However this could be a full-time role if you are happy to work weekends. The shifts are 9:30am-4:30pm with some flexibility for specific appointments or activities that are required.
Vacancy 1 (14hrs a week):
Week One: Saturday and Sunday
Week Two: Wednesday and Thursday
Vacancy 2 (17.5 hours a week):
Week One: Monday and Tuesday
Week Two: Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday
