About us

The Department of Statistical Science at UCL is the longest established university statistics department in the world and has played a pioneering role in the development of the subject since its foundation in 1911 It is one of nine departments within the UCL Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and maintains strong interdisciplinary links with the UCL Medical School through collaborations with the UCLH/UCL NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), the UCL Research Imaging Organisation (RIO), and the UCL Primary Care and Mental Health (PRIMENT) Clinical Trials Unit. The department conducts world-class research across a wide range of theoretical and applied areas. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021/22), over 97% of its research outputs were rated as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” in terms of originality, significance, and rigour. The Department teaches at all levels (undergraduate, MSc, short courses and PhD). The Biostatistics Group, led by Professor Rumana Omar, was established to strengthen the methodological quality of health research across UCL and its partner NHS Trusts. UCL and its associated Trusts offer a vibrant, collaborative environment for medical research. Within this context, the group undertakes an ambitious programme combining collaborative work with health researchers and the development of novel statistical methods to address complex biomedical challenges.

About the role

The postholder will join the Biostatistics Group within the Department of Statistical Science and work closely with health researchers in the UCL Research Imaging Organisation (RIO). This is an excellent opportunity for a medical statistician with a strong foundation in statistical methods for health research who is looking to further develop their expertise. The successful candidate will play a central role in enhancing the quality and rigour of medical research by providing expert statistical advice, collaborating on research projects, and conducting hands-on analyses of cutting-edge medical imaging studies. They will contribute to a diverse portfolio of high-impact projects, with potential opportunities to collaborate on research grant applications where appropriate. The role offers valuable experience in analysing data from a range of imaging studies, including clinical trials. In addition, the postholder will be supported and encouraged to develop their own methodological research interests and contribute to the group’s wider academic activities.

This post is available from the 1st September 2025 and funded full time for up to 3 years.

Salary grade 7 spine point 31 (£45,103 per annum) or 32 (£46,261 per annum).
