At Grundon Sand & Gravel we are seeking a confident and capable Quarry Supervisor to lead and oversee the day to day operations at our Cholsey site. This hands on role involves leading and developing a team to ensure efficient processing, minimising downtime, and maintaining high quality and safety standards. The successful candidate will support operational planning through daily reporting, assist with mobile plant operations when needed, and ensure compliance with company procedures. Flexibility is key, as occasional extra hours and travel to other sites may be required.
What you will do as a Quarry Supervisor
- Lead, motivate, and coach the team to work safely and efficiently, maximising productivity and ensuring competent mobile plant operation.
- Ensure all site activities comply with planning permissions and company regulations.
- Supervise material processing, monitor plant availability, and support production targets including quality control on silt reintroduction.
- Oversee adherence to HR procedures (absence, discipline, grievance, etc.) and assist in investigations alongside the Quarry Manager.
- Enforce safe operating procedures and maintain up-to-date risk assessments in line with company protocols.
- Act as the designated responsible person during emergencies such as fire or major incidents.
- Complete and maintain accurate daily reports, including plant throughput and site diary entries.
- Ensure preventative plant maintenance schedules are followed and plant/equipment checks are logged with prompt defect reporting.
- Lead by example to maintain a clean, safe, and secure working environment, with a strong focus on health, safety, and welfare, while undertaking additional tasks as required and ensuring full compliance with all company policies, procedures, and regulations
- Provide support with additional tasks as required by the Quarry or Operations Manager, including covering Site Manager responsibilities during absences and assisting at other quarry sites
What you will need:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience leading teams in a quarrying or similar industrial environment, ideally with a recognised supervisory qualification.
- Applicants must either hold or be prepared to pursue an NVQ Level 4 in the extractives industry, NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in mobile plant operation, and preferably NEBOSH certification.
- Strong understanding of process equipment, conveyors, pumps, and mobile plant, with the ability to identify and resolve faults effectively.
- Solid grasp of current health and safety practices, with a proactive approach to promoting a safe working environment.
- Proven ability to lead, coach, and motivate teams, identify training needs, and support the growth and performance of individual team members.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a positive, professional attitude and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Good computer literacy, including use of Microsoft Office, with the ability to complete reports and maintain accurate records.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and undertake new tasks, with hands-on experience operating mobile plant such as bulldozers, dumpers, and loading shovels.
- First Aid at Work certification is desirable, or a willingness to complete the training if not already held
- Full UK Driving License
