Company Description
TTP is an employee-owned technology and product development consultancy with a 40-year track record of partnering with ambitious clients to solve complex challenges and bring innovative, commercially successful solutions to market.
We invent, design, and develop impactful products and technologies across industries – from healthcare and life science to energy and communications – working at the intersection of engineering, physical science, and biology.
Our culture encourages entrepreneurship, shared ideas, and technical collaboration, while giving you the freedom to do your best work.
Job Description
As an experienced Optical Systems Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in our Eyecare team within the Health Tech business unit – developing transformative medical technologies that improve vision and ocular health.
From blank sheet to manufacture, you will take ownership of optical system design and integration, working at the cutting edge of innovation. Your work will span simulation, prototyping, testing, and design for manufacture – all while balancing technical, regulatory, and commercial considerations.
You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams – including physicists, electronics and mechanical engineers, software developers, and human factors specialists – and work with clients ranging from dynamic start-ups to global medtech and pharma companies.
While your core expertise lies in optical systems, your role will be diverse: contributing to system architectures, leading technical workstreams, and engaging directly with clients and suppliers to ensure successful outcomes. You will also have opportunities to apply your skills beyond Eyecare, contributing to projects across TTP’s wider Health Tech and multi-sector portfolio.
Qualifications
We’re seeking a technically brilliant and creative problem-solver who thrives in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment.
You will have:
- Proven experience in optical system design and build, from concept to manufacture.
- Proven experience working in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Strong skills in architecting, prototyping, and testing, with proficiency in an optical design tool (e.g. Zemax, CODE-V, OSLO, FRED), including tolerancing and thermal analyses.
- Hands-on experience in regulated sectors, ideally medical devices, is desirable.
- A strong academic background – a 1st or 2:1 degree in a physical science or engineering discipline; a PhD or equivalent industry experience is welcome.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, colleagues, and suppliers.
You will also be:
- Intellectually curious, adaptable, and proactive.
- Commercially minded, able to spot opportunities and build trusted relationships.
- A collaborative team member who enjoys mentoring and supporting others.
- Willing to travel for in-person meetings and client engagements.
