East Lothian Produce are a family-run farming business located in East Lothian, Scotland, established in 1976 by founder Billy Logan. The company has grown from a smallholding to a significant operation and supply a variety of fresh vegetables to local markets and major retailers across the UK and Europe. They focus on high-quality produce, including potatoes, sprouts, and various types of cabbage, and have invested in processing and packing facilities to enhance efficiency and quality.
What will you be doing:
East Lothian Produce are seeking a Machine Operator to join the team.
You will be involved in the day-to-day operation of our packhouse. Join our dedicated team responsible for operating and maintaining the machinery that processes and packs our seasonal crops throughout the year. You’ll be assigned to a specific team focused on machines tailored to each crop type, ensuring efficient and high-quality handling from harvest to packaging.
Due to the nature of this role, the role requires candidates to have access to their own car or transport.
Key Responsibilities:
- Daily check of machines, reporting maintenance issues to packhouse manager or engineer
- Ensuring clear and tidy working areas on and around the machines
- Quality checking raw produce and reporting issues to Quality Control
- Ensuring traceability information for storing all products and packaging for the line ensuring all the product has traceability at all times
- Training / Supervising Productive Operatives for trimming cabbage, picking bad quality sprouts, packing products, and always focusing on quality. Reporting any quality problems / issues with Quality Control
- Ensuring machine and production workers are working safely and following site protocol
- Ensuring all unused packaging materials are properly covered and stored
- Manage and control waste in accordance with customer-specific protocols and site production rules
- Packing for line, keeping stick of trays and upcoming orders.
- Organise team for efficiency and to meet quality / production specification targets
- You may be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business. This may include working outside of the packhouse, undertaking cleaning or maintenance of plant, equipment or buildings used by the Company
About You:
- Experience of working within a similar role
- Have a basic knowledge of food hygiene, company hygiene procedures, company quality policy, glass breakage procedure and health and safety
- The ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment and prioritise your workload.
- Able to use own initiative and work as part of a team to meet product targets.
- Strong attention to detail
- Good communicator, reliable respectful and must attend work punctually
