We have the opportunity to offer a x2 Locum Consultant position in General and Benign Upper GI Surgery to fill a long term absence for 6 months in the first instance, to be based at QEH or UHL, dependent on preference.
The Trust provides a comprehensive range of general acute hospital services from two hospital sites, University Hospital Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. The General Surgery department runs elective operating across three sites: University Hospital Lewisham, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Woolwich), and Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup—which serves as our High Volume Low Complexity (HVLC) surgical hub.
There is an active Postgraduate Education Department on both sites as part of a dynamic Education and Training directorate that is developing multi-professional training.
This is an exciting time to join the surgical department as we develop a wider clinical community and focus on expanding our emergency surgery service whilst supporting the Trust’s recovery plan to deal with the post COVID pandemic backlog in elective General and benign Upper GI surgery including anti-reflux procedures.
All applicants must have extensive experience of benign upper GI surgery, including anti-reflux surgery and endoscopy.
This post is to fill, in the first instance, a 6 month absence within the department for an Upper GI surgeon who has extensive experience in upper GI benign surgery, including anti-reflux surgery, as well as endoscopy. Provision of t eaching to undergraduate & postgraduate trainees, in liaison with the other Consultant members of the Department, is a fundamental part of daily activities.
The job plan will consist of ten programmed activities (10 PAs), including 1.5 SPAs, emergency work and endoscopy lists. The post holder will contribute to a 1:8 on call rota with prospective cover.
The Department holds regular audit, clinical and business meetings. All consultants and junior staff are expected to attend unless prior notice is given.
The General Surgery department operates across three sites: University Hospital Lewisham, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Woolwich), and Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup—which serves as our High Volume Low Complexity (HVLC) surgical hub. Post holders will be expected to work flexibly and participate in theatre sessions across all three sites as service demands require, ensuring effective delivery of surgical care throughout the network.
These fixed commitments within the timetable may be subject to change depending on the needs of the department. The post-holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility in frequency and arrangement of outpatient and theatre sessions.
