The International Growth Centre (IGC)

IGC Country Economist – Bangladesh

Contract Fee: from £27,000 net of taxes depending on experience and subject to local market conditions

This post is open-ended subject to funding. Funding is currently available until 30 September 2026.

The International Growth Centre (IGC) aims to promote sustainable growth in developing countries by providing demand-led policy advice based on frontier research. The IGC directs a global network of world-leading researchers and in-country teams in Africa and South Asia working closely with partner governments to generate high quality research and policy advice on key growth challenges.

The IGC is currently seeking a Country Economist to be based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

IGC Country Economists are the in-country representatives of the IGC, reporting to the Country Manager/Director. They manage and expand our in-country research portfolio, and also play a key role in influencing policy and maximising impact from our research. Our core thematic areas for research in Bangladesh focus on the determinants of economic growth including: (a) the mobilization and management of resources for growth; (b) inclusive and resilient jobs; (c) green growth; (d) investment promotion, trade and firm development; and, (e) productive and sustainable cities.

IGC Country Economists are the bridge between senior policymakers and researchers, engage in policy influencing activities, and lead project management. They also undertake economic analysis, co-author policy research papers, and write policy briefs, often in conjunction with senior researchers. This requires a highly pro-active and organised approach, utilisation of economic research skills and policy knowledge, experience in engaging with policy stakeholders, and a passion and skill for informing policy.

Applicants should have strong economics, knowledge of macro and micro economics, excellent quantitative skills of economic analysis, sophisticated understanding of policy issues in the Bangladesh country setting, excellent communications and organisational skills, and hold a post-graduate degree (MSc/MPA/MPP or PhD) in economics, development economics, trade and industrial organization, or a related discipline. This role is an exciting opportunity to build a portfolio of research projects, working alongside the IGC’s pool of leading academics. Knowledge and experience in the Bangladesh policy sector would be a significant advantage.

As the successful applicant will be based in Bangladesh, local statutory regulations will apply and therefore applicants will need to demonstrate Bangladesh nationality and right to work.
