What you would be doing
- You will be responsible for the strategic management of our laboratories, including developing strategies to identify and manage risks, and reviewing financial implications through a business planning process.
- You will also lead the planning and development of laboratory projects, advise senior leadership on future needs, and oversee the optimisation of space, equipment, and technical services to support research, teaching, and potential commercial opportunities.
- Leading on all building-related matters, you will oversee maintenance, refurbishment, and capital projects to ensure the Department’s spaces remain functional, safe, and fit for purpose.
- You will manage space allocation, infrastructure needs, and health and safety compliance, while supporting teaching and research through effective facilities planning and coordination with Imperial teams.
- You will also plan for technical support, equipment procurement, and budget oversight, ensuring safe and efficient operations that support research, teaching, and external projects.
- Overseeing the management and operation of all technical services across laboratories and workshops, including line management of technical staff, is also a key part of the role.
What we are looking for
- You will have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an Engineering or Physical Science subject, or be qualified to a minimum BTEC/HNC level or through a recognised apprenticeship, with extensive experience in a relevant technical or scientific role, ideally within Civil and Environmental Engineering or a related field.
- Proven experience managing technical teams and specialist facilities is essential, including coordinating major and minor works to agreed specifications, timelines, and budgets.
- You will have demonstrable strategic planning and risk management skills, with experience in developing and implementing strategies for laboratory facilities that support research and education.
- Strong technical knowledge is essential, including expertise in an engineering-related specialism, understanding of building systems, and familiarity with health and safety legislation and compliance.
- You will also have excellent communication skills and a consultative approach, with the ability to work collaboratively at a senior level and deliver strategic priorities aligned with departmental and institutional goals.

- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity
- A sector-leading salary and remuneration package, including 39 days off per year and generous pension schemes
- Access to a range of workplace benefits including a flexible working policy from day 1, generous family leave packages, on-site leisure facilities and a cycle-to-work scheme
