Are you a senior finance professional looking for a leadership opportunity in a world-class academic environment? The Department of Physics is seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as Deputy Head of Administration and Finance (Deputy HAF). This is a pivotal role for a strategically minded, solutions-driven professional who can confidently support a complex and dynamic department.
About the Role
As Deputy HAF, you will play a central role in the Department’s professional services team, deputising for the Head of Administration and Finance and leading the Department’s financial operations. You will manage a finance portfolio that includes an annual departmental budget of approximately £24 million, and oversee over 3,500 research projects worth more than £46 million. You will ensure the delivery of high-quality, effective, and efficient financial and operational services across a broad spectrum, including procurement, grant management, payroll, travel, and major event finances.
You will also be responsible for developing and implementing financial strategies that align with the Department’s strategic goals and academic mission.
This post is full time and permanent.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee departmental financial planning, forecasting, and compliance with University policies.
- Line manage the Finance Manager, Grants Manager, and Research Facilitation Manager, along with a team of ~20 professional staff.
- Provide authoritative strategic and operational support to the Head of Administration and Finance.
- Contribute to key university and divisional finance committees and working groups.
- Maintain and enhance systems and processes to support the Department’s teaching and world-class research.
- Deputise for the Head of Administration and Finance across all operational and administrative functions.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a dynamic leader who can combine strategic insight with robust operational delivery. You will have:
- A minimum requirement of a degree qualification and preferably a professional qualification in one of the primary areas of responsibility.
- Significant experience in financial and operational management in a large, complex organisation.
- Demonstrated leadership, people management, and team development skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with a range of academic and professional colleagues.
- A strong working knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, procurement, grant funding, and financial reporting.
- The ability to think analytically and strategically, and to influence and implement change effectively.
- Excellent IT skills
Experience in a higher education, research, or public sector environment is highly desirable.
