We're on the hunt for a proactive and creative Communications Assistant to join our fast-paced, forward-thinking communications team — and this is your chance to be part of it. Based at MOD Lyneham, this exciting role offers the opportunity to help shape the voice of The Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME). Working closely with the Communications Manager, you'll support the day-to-day delivery of communications, press, and public relations—driving awareness, safeguarding reputation, and ensuring our message cuts through with clarity and impact. If you're passionate about storytelling, media engagement, and making a real difference, this could be the role you've been waiting for.
As our Communications Assistant, you'll help develop and deliver engaging communication strategies that spotlight our three units — 8 Training Battalion REME, The REME Arms School, and No 4 School of Technical Training. You'll take a hands-on role in crafting compelling content, while building strong relationships across DSEME, the Defence College of Technical Training, and the wider Defence community. You'll play a vital part in corporate and internal communications, supporting policy updates, announcements, and crisis communications as needed — all while maintaining consistency in tone and alignment with MOD branding. Working closely with the Mitie Communications Manager and our unit teams, you'll contribute your flair for communications to multi-channel campaigns, using your words to bring the breadth and depth of our training delivery to life.
You'll also monitor media coverage and sentiment, using insights to inform smart recommendations, and you'll seek out high-impact opportunities — such as innovation, leadership, awards, or sporting achievements — to raise the profile of our units and their personnel. Supporting the coordination of internal and external visits will be another key part of the role, which may involve liaising with media, photographers, MT, and the Mess. You'll also be expected to support other team members and contribute to a safe working environment.
We're looking for
A natural storyteller with experience in PR, media relations, or communications — someone who knows how to create content that resonates. You're confident turning complex ideas into engaging narratives, with strong writing skills, sharp judgement, and the ability to navigate reputational risks with clarity and confidence. You're proactive, hands-on, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where managing multiple projects is part of the excitement. Experience in the Defence sector is a bonus, but more importantly, you're driven by purpose, eager to make a positive impact, and ready to help amplify the voice and reputation of the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.
